Hawai'i

The Islands of your dreams

After two weeks on mainland US, I left from San Francisco on the westcoast to Honolulu on Hawaii'.

This Flight of almost ten hours was the secondlongest on my trip and due to the not to modern fleet and not exactly perfect Service by United Airlines not the best.

From the kind of strange Airport of Honolulu I went to my Hostel, right on Waikiki Beack, in the midst of tourism, with all the nice hotels, fancy stores and the pacific ocean.
Right thereI spent two weeks, not bad.

The first thing on my list for Hawaii' was, what it is known for: Beach and Ocean. At the kind of small and often really full Beach of Waikiki, and in the very uncalm waves of the pacific ocean I enjoyed my time, after all the citys and towns I have stayed in before.

But I did not relax on the beach all the time. Next to the beach Hawaii' is known for it's variety, so it made sense to  rent a nice little convertible together with a very nice Siss girl, and discover the wonderfull Isalnd of O'ahu

There is so much to see on this uniquue little island; rocky cliffs, white beaches, rough waves with surfers all over them, and tender bays, tiny isles and high mountains, tropical rainforest, and in the islands west even a bit of desert.

Two weeks at one place are quite long for me as a traveller, so whenever I did not feel like going somewhere or the beach, I went to Fort Derussy.

There I could not only get good affordable food, but also two beachvolleyball courts.

I met a lot of interesting people there, students, fellow travellers and locals and had a chat with them and played volleyball 'till the sun went down.

Pearl Harbor

The darkest chapter in Honolulus history in the most cruel and terrifying book of history worldwide.

In the morning hours of the 7th December 1941 the Navy base Pearl Harbor. once startingpoint for the expansion into the pacific, was attacked by the japanese fleet.
Nearly two and a half thousand people died that morning. Three American Battleships, five japanese submarines were sunk, and far over 300 planes shot down or damaged.

This event was the for the USA to enter WWII
The USS Arizona
The USS Arizona
The wreck of the USS Arizona, one of the battleships sunk that dayn still lays in the bay, and silently weeps.
The so called "Tears of the Arizona", which probably will still be there in over 100 years are the remains of the thousands of tons of oil, the ship had loaded for fuel, at least the part, that did not burn up in the massive explosion, together with the many men still onboard.

This unwillingfull testimony of human "strength" and all of war's cruelty was very moving for me. It clearly shows, at what great afford humankind tries to protect itself against brotherrs, and how few it's use is, and how big it's destruction.

, and the landscape was indescribable
One of my three weeks in Hawaii' I spent on Maui. Here it was much more silent and calmer, then in the massively touristy Hanolulu, and the landscape was just incredibly  beautifull. Green hills and mountains, rainforest and waterfalls.
Sadly though, there is not much more to say, write, or show, as I did not have a camera on me during my time there, as my 5D MK III was in repair in California at that time.
To not leave you hanging completly I have a little tip for you, on how to peel a pineapple in just 12 seconds. Just click the Picture below, to see how it's done.
